Matthew Rooke

Head of Science

As the Head of Science, Matthew works to make science engaging, accessible, and meaningful for all students. Before joining GFD, Matthew was part of the extended leadership team at his previous school in Somerset. Being an Associate Assistant Headteacher with the dual role of Head of Year and Raising Standards Lead, Matthew is passionate about helping young people build confidence in their understanding of the world through practical, thoughtful, and enjoyable learning. A large part of raising standards, is identifying where students can improve and support them across the whole school academically, to achieve the best possible outcomes. Bringing this experience and knowledge to GFD, will enable all students in Science to achieve.

He believes that science should encourage curiosity and problem-solving, not just memorising facts. Under his leadership, the science department focuses on hands-on learning, real-world applications, and supporting every student to achieve their personal best—whether they’re aiming for top exam results or simply learning how science connects to everyday life.

Matthew also plays an active role in supporting wider school life, from helping run STEM clubs to guiding students through science-related career pathways.
