Head of Key Stage 1
Simone Shaikh is delighted to serve as the Head of Key Stage 1 at GFD, where her passion for joyful, high-achieving classrooms and her leadership expertise come together to nurture a vibrant learning community. With over 15 years of experience in international education, nine of which have been dedicated to GEMS Founders, she has built her career on creating inclusive, nurturing spaces where every student and educator can flourish.
Having taught across both Year 1 and Year 2, Simone has inspired children, guided colleagues and led teams with enthusiasm and vision. In roles such as Head of Year and Lead Practitioner for Teaching Assistants and now as KS1 Leader, she remains committed to raising teaching standards, promoting progress and celebrating each child’s unique strengths. Simone holds degrees in Sociology and Education, plus an IPGCE from the University of East London, qualifications that provided the foundation for her innovative, research-informed approach to learning. Her dedication has been recognised with the Mariamma Varkey Award, the Yalla Schools Best Teacher Award and a place among the finalists in the TES Awards for International Schools.
In her leadership capacity, Simone works closely with teachers, parents and the wider school community to establish strong foundations in the early years of primary education. She is passionate about implementing a curriculum that balances creativity, challenge and character development while prioritising the wellbeing of both students and staff. Under her enthusiastic guidance, Key Stage 1 has continued to thrive and her influence extends beyond the classroom. Simone’s leadership contributed to GEMS Founders School being named a finalist in the Schools Compared Top School Awards, a high-profile recognition often referred to as the “Oscars of UAE education”
Outside the classroom Simone enjoys developing interactive teaching resources, exploring innovative strategies and celebrating the achievements of her students and colleagues. She values strong partnerships with families and believes that open communication is key to a thriving school community. Simone is excited to continue shaping a magical blend of learning, laughter and success at GFD, ensuring that Key Stage 1 remains a place where everyone can grow, flourish and discover their full potential.
